Why Tech
Craig Wilson, History
Why I chose Tech (for history!)
Simple. This place IS history-history is all around: at the top of
Quincy hill, across the river at the smelter in Ripley, and even in
downtown Houghton. Furthermore, the S.S. department is very
personal-everyone can get to know everyone, giving one an important
sense of belonging.
Matt Griffith, SS Education
I came to MTU because it has a great reputation and the courses appealed
to me. I enjoy SS because it allows me to think outside of the box, and
to
look to the deeper meaning of why do people do the things they do and
how
society influence their choices. Also I respect the well know history
profs. Since history is my drug of choice, the insight Tech professors
give is great. Plus, where else can you have great PE classes that you
have to take anyway like shotgunning, rifle, archery, and golf.
Kyle Schneider, Social Sciences
I originally came to Tech to study Computer Engineering. After a year
and a half of that (during which I was increasingly doubting my choice
of major) I decided to relegate computers to hobby status. I've wanted
to teach for quite a while, and history has always been a passion for
me, so I switched. It was the best decision I have ever made. My classes
are more interesting, the professors are friendly (the vast majority
of all professors on campus are, though) and I can really get into class
discussions. I don't have any regrets about switching.
Summer Hodgman, Law & Society
I came to Tech hoping to be a computer engineer, and instead realized
I enjoyed the Social Sciences more than Engineering. I chose Pre-Law
not only because I wanted to go into Political Science (International
Relations) but also because I wouldn't have to take Calculus. I was
a transfer student, though, after having taken two years off to work
between my former college and Tech. As such I took the harder, more
interesting courses first and the freshman requirements last.
Rebecca Subert, Secondary Education
The weekend I came up was just when the leaves were turning the beautiful
yellows, oranges, and reds. With that breath-taking site combined with
the small-town, community oriented feel, I just knew it was a great
place to be.
About The Department
Elithe Zoglman, Law & Society
The great thing about this department is it has such a personal feel.
Even if you have never had a professor for a class they are excited
to get to you and help you when they can. It has been a great experience!
Rebecca Subert, Secondary Education
My years in the Social Sciences Department have been great ones. The faculty
are knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and easily accessible. In addition,
there are enough faculty to keep the class sizes down, and that has
really given me a chance to excel in the classroom.
