Social Science - BS: General Option
Page last updated June 8, 2009 The B.S. degree in Social Sciences (general option) provides students with broad exposure to the various social science disciplines, along with the opportunity to focus a portion of their studies on a particular area of interest. The social sciences include archaeology, anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. They also include the interdisciplinary area of Science, Technology, and Society Studies (STS), one of Michigan Tech's strengths. All of these disciplines share the common goal of understanding how human behavior is organized and how it changes over time. Undergraduate study in the social sciences can lead to graduate work and careers in a wide variety of areas. Past graduates have pursued careers in fields as diverse as law, social work, teaching, public administration, and business. The social science curriculum at Michigan Tech emphasizes flexibility. It permits students to focus courses around specific social sciences of interest (such as sociology, anthropology, or archaeology), while providing a broad exposure to the social sciences as a whole. The curriculum also includes a large block of free electives to permit students to explore other branches of learning or to focus their studies on courses of possible vocational value. Graduation Requirements are for Non-transition Students. For information about courses, see Undergraduate Instruction.
