Dr. Farris is a visiting faculty member at Michigan Tech for the 2007-08 school year. He will be teaching courses in American architecture and historic preservation, as well as Asian architecture, art, and archaeology. Previously, he taught for two years at Washington University in Saint Louis and one year at Penn State. His current work focuses on the impact of foreigners on the architecture and urban fabric of the city of Guangzhou (also known as Canton), China, from the 18th to the 20th centuries. His article, "Thirteen Factories of Canton: An Architecture of Sino-Western Collaboration and Confrontation," will appear in the 2007 edition of the journal, Buildings and Landscapes: Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Farris is currently working on a book entitled Dwelling on the Edge of Empires: Foreigners, Architecture, and Canton, China. He has also written book reviews for the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians and the Vernacular Architecture Newsletter. Dr. Farris has a particular interest in how buildings, cities, and landscapes reflect cross-cultural interaction. He also has also had significant experience in the fields of historic preservation, early American architecture and decorative arts, and historical archaeology, and is the author of several successful individual and district nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.
