Annex Rehabilitation Project

April 5, 2007

AnnexDuring Fall 2006, students in CE4905 (Engineering Design Project) and SS4030 (Senior Project) shared an interdisciplinary senior design project that explored ways to rehabilitate and renovate the Annex to the Academic Office Building on the MTU campus. The project was initiated by Social Sciences Chair Bruce Seely while Distinguished Practitioner in Residence Bill Leder in Civil and Environmental Engineering directed the project. The senior design students were grouped into two teams, with each group composed of one Social Sciences student and five Civil and Environmental Engineering students. One group, Limited Construction Inc., was assigned a restricted budget and asked to identify the most basic steps needed to meet building and fire codes and the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act. The second group, Superior Research & Engineering, had a larger budget that allowed them to explore the circulation of people within the building and more extensive renovations. They explored the possibility of reconnecting the Annex and the main Academic Office Building. This feature provides an online exhibit of both team projects, highlighting the drawings that show their recommendations. The University Facilities Department is now exploring ways to start implementing those recommendations, which are central to the Department's efforts to make full use of this space.
