Degree Options

The Department of Social Sciences supports two graduate programs at the master's degree level: Industrial Archaeology and Environmental Policy, and a Ph.D. program in Industrial Heritage and Archeology that extends graduate education and research in industrial archeology to the doctoral level. All of these programs are interdisciplinary, drawing on multiple social science disciplines. The MS Program in Industrial History and Archaeology draws on historical archaeology, anthropology of industry, history of technology, and historical preservation. The doctoral program in Industrial Heritage and Archeology adds to this list of related academic fields work in American civilization, architectural history, material culture, and heritage management. The MS Environmental Policy Program draws on geography, political science, and sociology of natural resources. Importantly, there are opportunities for students with a technical background in engineering or science to pursue these graduate degrees, alongside students who have previously earned degrees in various social science and humanities disciplines.
