Frontiers and Fortresses: Study Abroad Program July 4-August 2, 2012

NEW Lower Pricing Anticipated: Currently the program fee is $3,400, however thanks to a new initiative announced by Provost Seel in October it is very likely that if some quite reasonable enrollment targets are met that we will have much lower fee. The current goal is $3,100. READ MORE

Frontiers and Fortresses is a four week, three course, nine credit Michigan Tech Study Abroad program hosted by the University of Cumbria. The leader, Dr. Carl Blair, and the students will explore issues of history and archaeology in Cumbria and across northern England and southern Scotland. A mix of classroom work, field trips and site visits will make up the course.

Archaeology Program Extends to Puerto Rico

Dr. Sam Sweitz is building connections in Puerto Rico to enrich the Industrial Archaeology program at Michigan Tech. He aims to establish a cooperative agreement with the University of Puerto Rico for collaborations, exchanges, field schools, and dual degree programs.

The Biographical Dictionary of Copper Country Architects contains information on 25 architects who were known to have designed buildings in the Copper Country of Michigan, narrowly defined here as Houghton and Keweenaw counties. 2008 History of Hawai‘i Calendar

Svalbard Achaeology

Research on the industrial history of the island chain of Svalbard is featured in Lake Superior Magazine and in its own website maintained by the Industrial Archaeology team in Social Sciences at Michigan Tech. It was the subject of a 2005 symposium and a 2005 thesis by Edward W. Tennant.

MacLennan Contributes to History of Hawai`i Calendar

Associate Professor Carol MacLennan has published an article, "Kilauea Sugar Plantation in 1912: A Snapshot," in the Hawaiian Journal of History, Vol. 41, 2007. It, along with the photographs from a 1912 photo album, provides the content for the 2008 "History of Hawai`i Calendar."

Michigan Tech will celebrate International Education Week, a national initiative launched by former President Bill Clinton, Nov. 12-16. The 2007 International Education Week’s theme is “Fostering Global Citizenship and Respect,” announced by US Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.
