Utah Pottery Project:

View from Utah Route 6 toward the settlements of the Wasatch Front with mountains in the background.

Join MTU's Industrial Archaeologists digging in beautiful Southern Utah.  Project members are using archaeology to reconstruct the pottery industry in nineteenth-century Utah. During the summer of 2009, we will excavate the site of Thomas and Sarah Davenport's pottery shop in Parowan, Utah (1853-1888). The Davenports were immigrants from the area of Brampton, Derbyshire, England, a region known for its stoneware factories.

The immigrant potters provide excellent opportunities to study creativity, work, and adaptation, since each potter left their home environment and set up new lives in the desert west.  They overcame challenges from new raw material, limited technical knowledge, new fuels, and shortages of equipment and capital.  Social challenges were equally as daunting-- limited business skills, new social expectations for their products, globalization, industrialization, and new religious contexts.  Student excavators will also help interpret the site to visitors and contribute to planning a replica of the Davenports' pot shop that will operate at the Iron Mission State Park Museum in Cedar City, Utah.

You can expect to live in a field camp in the Wasatch mountains above Parowan.  There is no residential housing fee.  You can arrive in your own vehicle, but everyone will coordinate arrival times so staff can meet students arriving my air.  Students should bring their own tent and basic camping equipment.  Some cooking and other common supplies will be provided, but you will be responsible for your own meals.  On past projects, students often provision and prepare meals collaboratively.  More details about residential plans will be provided at a later date.

This is an equal opportunity course, and students with disabilities or special needs should contact Dr. Scarlett to discuss accomodations during the registration process.

Students from Other Universities:

First, download an application form and send it to the IA program.  Then students should visit the Registrar at the home university and request a "Guest Student Application Form."  Using your own university's form streamlines your credit transfer process.  If your university does not have such a form, access the web address below and print out the State of Michigan's Guest Student Registration Form.

https://www.admin.mtu.edu/em/students/records/guest.php

Type in your information.  You are applying to Michigan Technological University (Form item #11).  The form asks if you are planning to take either SS 3210, Track A (undergraduate) or SS 5700, Track A (Graduate).  These classes go into Box #15 on the form.  The dates and cost estimates are above.  Track A is the West Point Foundry project in New York.  You may enroll in whatever number of credit hours your institution requires.  For example, some universities require their students to complete 4 credit hours of field school training.  You should enroll for the number of credits appropriate to your home department or university's requirements.

You might need to take the form to your university's registrar and they will certify your application and forward the form to MTU's admissions office.  You should ask your registrar.  They will probably ask you to include a $30 application fee.  MTU's admissions office will stamp the form and send it along to our Student Records and Administration office.  Direct questions about registering to:
