Applying to the Program

The Environmental Policy program is administered by the Department
of Social Sciences. Applicants are judged on the basis of past academic
performance, recommendations from faculty members, GRE scores, and
demonstrated scholarly potential. To apply to the Environmental
Policy program, please do the following:
- Inform the Director of the Environmental Policy Program (bdsolomo@mtu.edu)
or a faculty member with whom you have corresponded that you are
applying.
- Prepare an application that includes:
- a completed application form (online)
- your GRE test results, and TOEFL test results for students whose native language is not English
- an application fee (waived if you apply electronically see Grad School for information)
- an official copy of all your college transcripts mailed directly to the Graduate School
- a Statement of Purpose
- three completed recommendation forms in sealed envelopes
- a resume (encouraged, but not required, attach file via email to Barry Solomon)
- Mail your application package to:

- Forward your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and TOEFL scores, as applicable, to the
graduate school.

When filling out the form, be sure to specify that you
are applying to enter the PhD in Envrironmental and Energy Policy or M.S. Environmental Policy Program. |

Include a check made out to Michigan Technological University. |
| Statement
of Purpose |
Include a Statement of Purpose that identifies your goals and interests in the
study of environmental policy, including the aspects of the field which are
of particular interest to you. Feel free to reflect upon the factors that have
stimulated your interests and upon your professional goals. |
| Letters of Recommendation |
Obtain copies of our recommendation form by downloading it from the
university's Graduate School website or by requesting an application package from the
Director of the Environmental Policy Program (bdsolomo@mtu.edu).
Write "Environmental and Energy PhD or Environmental Policy Masters - Social Sciences" in the
"Department _________" blank at the top of the Grad School's letter of
reference form.
Ask three individuals to complete a recommendation form and to
return the completed forms to you
in envelopes with their signatures on the seal. Generally,
these forms should be completed by faculty members.
If you have been out of school for some time, one
or two letters from supervisors would be appropriate. |
| GRE Scores |
When you fill out the GRE application, the Institution Number for Michigan
Tech is 1464. If English is not your first language, you
must also forward your TOEFL scores. |
Deadline
We maintain an open-ended applications policy. However, we make decisions
regarding financial support for the coming academic year in March. Therefore,
to assure full consideration for support, please be sure that we receive your
applications by March 1.

Financial Assistance
A limited number of teaching and research assistantships are available.
All students admitted for graduate study are considered for these
awards. Generally, awards are made in March and April for the ensuing
academic year. Additional information on graduate support and financial
aid (including loans, work-study programs, and special assistance)
is available from the Graduate School.
